Are You Too Busy for God?

The Busyness of Life

We live in a world filled with constant distractions. The busyness of life can easily pull our attention away from what matters most. We find ourselves scrolling on our phones during our free time rather than reading Scripture or spending time listening to God's Word.

This is what I want to talk about.

A Question That Exposed My Heart

For the past two years, I have spent nine months living in Europe and three months in America, living out of a suitcase and bouncing from house to house. During that time, I found myself in seasons where I only spent ten minutes with God, while at other times I was consistent because I had a clear system in place.

Maybe you are busy with work, kids, caregiving, or whatever your situation may be. But the truth is that nobody is too busy for God.

The question I had to ask myself—the question that was difficult to answer honestly—was this:

Do I really love my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and value my relationship with Him?

Of course, our immediate answer would be yes. But if we're being truthful, sometimes our actions tell a different story.

What Your Priorities Reveal

If you misplaced your phone, you would immediately begin looking for it. You might even ask someone to call it so you can find it.

Meanwhile, your Bible may be collecting dust somewhere in your home.

The reality is that our priorities are often revealed by what we pursue first. We make time for what we truly value.

That can be a difficult truth to accept, but it is one worth considering.

You Have More Time Than You Think

Let's start by looking at our time.

Every one of us has 24 hours in a day. The goal is to be intentional and make the most of them.

Let's begin with sleep.

If you can get eight hours of sleep, that's great. Maybe six hours is all you can get. This is where having a system becomes important. If you wake up at 6:00 a.m., go to bed at 10:00 p.m. If you wake up at 8:00 a.m., go to bed at midnight. Build a bedtime schedule that works for you.

Rest Is Obedience

Rest is obedience. It is a way to honor your body and treat it like the temple God designed it to be.

Now you are rested and ready for the day. You have sixteen waking hours to become the best version of yourself.

Some people have flexible schedules and can go with the flow. Others have busy mornings and need to be at work by 8:00 a.m.

Before You Reach for Your Phone

If that is you, would it be wise to say, "Jesus, I value You, so I want and get to spend my morning with You"

Spending time with God may look as simple as not grabbing your phone first thing in the morning. It may look like stepping outside, sitting in your secret place, saying thank You, and spending a few moments in His presence.

You've gotten your sleep. You've set aside an hour to spend with God. Now you head to work.

Are You Really Too Busy for God?

You work a full day and come home exhausted. Maybe work was difficult. Maybe it was great.

To stay on topic, we won't go into detail about how to be a reflection of Christ throughout the day. Instead, let's return to the question:

Are you too busy for God?

Now you may have six hours left before doing it all again tomorrow.

Maybe you are a mother cooking meals and cleaning the house. Maybe you are a husband, a father, or a man working hard to provide for your family.

I understand.

This is often the time when we feel the busiest because it is also the time when we want to rest.

Where Do You Go for Rest?

Matthew 11:28 says:

"Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."

This part of your day may be filled with cooking, cleaning, relaxing, side projects, or taking your kids to practice. Whatever your responsibilities may be, we need to establish a meeting time with God that is non-negotiable.

Whether it is before those activities or after them, find a time that works for you and commit to it.

The reality is that we do have time.

The question is, where do we go for rest?

Do we go to the television?

Do we go to our phones?

Do we go to a drink?

Jesus knows our struggles and understands our weariness. That is exactly why He says:

"Come to Me."

Make It Non-Negotiable

Every important relationship in our lives requires intentional time. Our relationship with Christ is no different.

If spending time with God only happens when we feel like it, life will always find a way to crowd Him out.

Set a meeting time with God that is non-negotiable. Protect it. Prioritize it. Build your day around it.

Not because God needs your time, but because you need Him.

You Have Time, But Do You Have Desire?

So I will end with this.

Check your screen time.

Look at your day.

No matter who you are, Jesus comes before your partner, your children, your parents, and your friends.

It takes obedience and discipline to say:

"I'm not going to scroll right now. I'm going to spend time with Jesus."

You have the time.

The real question is:

Do you truly love God and value your relationship with Him?
