Going Into Battle With a Plan

Throughout my 20 years of playing basketball, I have played at a high-level Division 1 and now i am currently playing professionally. I've learned that understanding the game (battle) becomes easier with a scouting report and knowledge of players' tendencies. By dedicating time to study and comprehend your opponents' strengths and weaknesses, you increase your chances of winning. For example, If I know a player typically starts the game slowly but intensifies in the last 10 minutes, it's wise to be prepared and devise a strategy to disrupt his plan. This approach is similar to engaging in the daily spiritual battle, which requires nourishing your spirit daily with the Word and investing time in understanding your adversaries.

Triggers

It's important to recognize your triggers and areas of vulnerability. If you continue watching Netflix shows that cater to your desires and trigger certain thoughts, it's necessary to reassess whether it's wise to engage with that content. Although we live in a world where unexpected events are common, we all have choices. You can choose to keep your phone in a private space or leave it in another room. You can decide to scroll through TikTok or read a book. Surrounding yourself with triggers indicates a lack of a strategic plan, or "scouting report," to stay alert throughout the day. A practical method for creating a scouting report for triggers is to establish time blocks. These require discipline and will help you progress in your personal growth rather than regress.

Craving

Proverbs 6:27-28 27 Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned?

28 Can one go upon hot coals, and his feet not be burned? The answer is no! I would convince myself to take a quick glance or get a little smell of some weed, but I would inevitably get burned. You might resist it for a day, a week, or even a month, but once that trigger is activated, it escalates into a craving that has the ability to consumes you. Matthew 26:41 41 “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” We can take the verse Jesus spoke to Peter and relate it to our current situations. Our flesh is weak, and many of us are trying to overcome habits we've had for months or even years. So, how can we stop the craving? A strategy for this might include fasting, prayer, texting your accountability partner, leaving the room, exercising, and worship. These are just a few examples, and I strongly recommend incorporating them into your strategy against the enemy. Satan will lurk and prowl like a roaring lion.

Action

"Just a quick look," "Just one more time," "One time won't hurt anyone." These are the lies the enemy tells us. Without a plan and understanding of the situation, we might start believing these falsehoods. This behavior didn't occur spontaneously, it began with a trigger set off some time ago. Like pulling the pin from a grenade, it's only a matter of time before you fall into that action.

(How to make a scouting report)

Names

We need to identify who is participating in the game. I'll provide you with some names, but I always encourage you to do your own research.

  • Lucifer: The supreme fallen angel, often associated with pride and ruling Hell.

  • Satan: The primary adversary in Abrahamic religions, known as the tempter.

  • Asmodeus: A demon of lust, revenger of wickedness, and master of gambling.

  • Leviathan: A demon of chaos and envy, often depicted as a sea monster.

  • Belphegor: A demon of sloth and ingenious inventions.

It's crucial to identify your opponents and the demonic spirits attacking you during a battle. After learning their names, it's essential to know their origins, strengths, and weaknesses.

Origins / Strengths / Weaknesses

Each of these areas should be included in your scouting report. If you were building a scouting report on Belphegor, it might look something like this. If you consistently struggle with procrastination, lack of motivation, or patterns of laziness or if you find yourself sitting around, avoiding responsibility, and drifting through the day, then you must respond with strategy and not emotion. Create a schedule that removes the opportunity for sloth to arise. Structure your day in a way that limits idle time and strengthens discipline. That may mean stepping outside for a walk, committing to the gym for a set period, or assigning yourself non negotiable tasks. Time blocking is one of the most effective defenses. When you enter the day with a clear plan, you eliminate unnecessary decision making and reduce vulnerability to distraction and passivity. You can tell the enemy to take its best shot, but when you operate with intentional structure and stand firm in the strength of the Lord Jesus Christ, it has no authority to rule your day.
